About Us

Scouts prepare young people for Skills For Life

At Icknield District Scouts, we prepare young people with Skills for Life - not just for today, but for everything the future holds.

Each week, almost 1000 young people across Luton, Flitwick, Harlington and Barton step into the adventure with us. They might be aged 4 - 25, but they're learning lessons that last a lifetime: Teamwork, leadership, resilience, confidence, and kindness.

From their first time pitching a tent to delivering a speech, from solving challenges with friends to dreaming big about the future, Scouts gain the skills that help them shine - in the classroom, in their careers, and in their communities. These are the same skills that have shaped Scouts into Teachers, Engineers, Carers, Social Workers, Entrepreneurs, Astronauts, and Olympians.

We welcome Everyone - All genders, backgrounds, and abilities. If you're curious, we'll help you find your adventure. If you're nervous, we'll cheer you on. And if you're ready to take on the world, we'll give you the tools and the team to get there.

What do Scouts do?

Scouts are doers, tryers and explorers. Yes, we camp, hike, canoe, cycle, swim and abseil - but our adventures go far beyond the outdoors.

Weekly meetings are packed with activities designed to be fun, challenging, and rewarding. Young people might be:

  • Building shelters or lighting a campfire for the first time
  • Learning first aid, cooking a meal or mastering a new sport
  • Taking part in community projects and making a real difference
  • Working in teams to solve creative challenges
  • Playing games that build friendship and confidence

All this feeds into our Badge Scheme - a core part of the Scouting experience. Young people earn badges for skills they develop, challenges they complete, and adventures they take on. From cooking to navigation to environmental conservation and digital skills, there's a badge for almost everything.

For the most committed, its possible to achieve Chief Scout's Award, Duke of Edinburgh or even King's Scout Award. These achievements stand out on CVs, university applications, and job interviews, showing dedication, initiative, and leadership.

Volunteers - The Heart of Scouting

Scouting simply wouldn't happen without volunteers - and we're always looking for people like you.

Whether you can give an hour a month or a night a week, you can make a difference. We have roles for:

  • Hands-on Leaders running activities and adventures
  • Behind-the-scenes heroes helping with admin, events, and planning
  • Parent Helpers lending a hand when they can

You don't need experience, outdoor skills, or a uniform - just a willingness to get involved and see young people thrive.

And here's the best bit: our Award-winning training means you'll gain confidence, leadership skills, and memories of your own. Over 90% or our volunteers say what they've learned in Scouts has been useful in their professional or personal life.

Why We Do It

Because we know young people can achieve incredible things - and sometimes all they need is a little encouragement, a safe space to grow, and someone to believe in them.

Whether you join as a young person or as a volunteer, you'll be part of something bigger: a movement that's changing lives in Luton and around the world
